Image Analysis Lab

From Bangor Imaging Unit

The BIU Image Analysis Lab is on the lower ground floor of the Brigantia building just down the hall from the MRI scanner.

Computers

The lab has ten PCs. The computers have powerful Intel® Core™ i7-9700 CPUs, 16GB RAM and a 240GB M.2 SSDand a 500GB SSD. Displays in the lab are Dell U2518D QHD(2560x1440). The displays support HDR10.

Dual Boot

The Grub boot loader gives a choice of Windows 10 or Ubuntu 20.0.4. When the grub menu appears press the down arrow key twice and hit enter to start Windows. Press enter for Ubuntu. After 10 seconds grub will automatically launch Ubuntu.
If you accidentally enter the grub command line, type reboot at the grub> prompt.
To change operating systems, restart the PC.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a popular linux based operating system.

Getting Started

Using Ubuntu is straightforward. See the Ubuntu Desktop Guide if you need help. The computers all have a single student account. Log in details are available from your instructor.

The user accounts are local. Files are stored on the computer you are using, not a remote server. If you move to a different computer, your files will not follow. We strongly suggest you back up everything on a personal external drive. Ubuntu is able to read and write to disks formatted for use with Windows or MacOS (NTFS, EXFAT and HFS+ all work). Ask Andrew if you have problems.
